Thematic Cross-Curricular Units for England

Resource Image

Thematic Units

Each KS1unit has a key subject focus, with ample teaching material to last approximately six to eight weeks.

These units are specifically tailored to the National Curriculum. By buying a trial individual unit, you can be confident of exciting and engaging lessons that children will love. This will give you an opportunity to sample our Toolkit before fully adopting the cohesive Dimensions Curriculum. Teachers will appreciate not having to hunt down resources and having a learning flow and sequence of lessons that teaches in the way pupils learn best – the joined-up way.

Cross-Curricular Learning

Each unit comes with a CD-ROM with all resources and electronic versions of lesson plans, learning objectives and activities to save time planning.

You can choose one of the following Thematic Units to buy individually:-

     1. How Does Your Garden Grow?

Garden Grow Science Thematic Unit England Curriculum KS1This theme is based around plants and how they grow, with a key focus on science. It begins with learning about the structure of common plants, how seeds and bulbs grow and the conditions that plants need in order to flourish. The unit then moves on to looking at how to recognise and name common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees before finishing with a section about plants as food and an introduction to simple food chains.

This theme has cross-curricular links to art, dance, drama, using ICT, literacy, talking and listening, using maths, music and PSHE.

2. Fairies and Frogs

Fairies and Frogs Thematic Unit England CurriculumThis theme is based around fairy tales, with a key focus on literacy and drama. It is designed to enable pupils to develop a love of stories, as well as providing a vehicle for creative arts work. Stories should be chosen carefully with previous year groups to avoid duplication. However, the three suggested in this unit (The Ugly Duckling, Red Riding Hood and Cinderella) work well.

This theme has cross-curricular links to art, dance, drama, using ICT, science, talking and listening, using maths, music and PSHE.

3. Never Eat Shredded Wheat

This theme is based around where food comes from, with a key focus on geography. It begins by FC Never Eatlooking at compass
directions and locational language, before moving on to learning about continents and oceans. Physical and human geographical features are explored and the British Isles are then examined more closely. Using this as a context, the learning then moves on to where foods come from around the world.

This theme has cross-curricular links to art, drama, using ICT, literacy, using maths, music and PSHE.

Comment from Ofsted March 2016, Waterloo Primary School, Ashton-Under-Lyne

"The school's curriculum ensures a strong focus on developing the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Pupils' knowledge and skills in other subjects, such as science, geography, history and art are developed through a range of cross-curricular topics and themes, which are planned to capture and motivate their interest and develop a love of learning. Pupils' positive views about their work reflect that this is successful."

Marking Quote

“The Ofsted inspection reflected a huge improvement in our past performance. They were impressed with all aspects of the school and could see the curriculum work we are doing through Dimensions has made a big difference. They were particularly impressed with the marking programmes and the fact that the children were able to explain how they worked and implement next steps themselves. There is no doubt that Dimensions has had a hugely positive impact on raising standards.”

Bubbles Quote

"Bubbles resources are incredibly simple and easy to follow. The warm-up activities are great – my children are singing ‘Radio Rock’ continually at the moment!!! I like the fact it links with other resources we have in school and that it reinforces teaching in other curricular areas. I've found it to be an invaluable, creative way to teach and wouldn't hesitate in recommending the resources to other teachers."
