Boost Speaking and Learning across the Curriculum!
To succeed in life, children and young people must be able to understand people and express themselves clearly. We all use speaking and listening in our daily lives to share ideas, solve problems, make decisions, socialise and interact in a wide variety of situations.
Speech Bubbles is a ‘pick up and teach’ scheme of work to improve children’s speaking and listening skills. KS1 Speech Bubbles is packed full of colourful pages of lesson plans, with learning objectives linked to the 2014 National Curriculum, complete with all resources. Ideal for interventions or as a whole-class resource to improve pupils’ oracy skills, but without adding to teachers’ workload of drilling down to find LOs and hunting for quality resources.
Much of chidren’s self-confidence and attitudes to learning are founded in their ability to use talk effectively. Speaking and listening are key within the teaching and learning process; discussion and collaboration in the classroom helps to develop creativity, imagination, thinking and problem solving skills. We believe that lessons focusing on improving speaking and listening skills – through activities set in cross-curricular contexts and topics – will not only boost literacy and learning in general, but will increase chidlren’s self-esteem as better communicators.
“The Speech Bubbles speaking and listening lessons are so fantastic and creative, I want to go back into the classroom and teach them!”

Explicit Teaching of Speaking and Listening Skills
The Speech Bubbles scheme of work highlights how talk and oracy can be employed across the curriculum to develop children’s ability to analyse, evaluate, think creatively and collaborate with others. These skills will develop their overall learning and understanding of the world around them. Creative lesson plans and activities explicity teach how to be a good speaker and listener – ideal for small group activities, developing team work or for use as a whole-class resource.
All resources are included to save teachers time. As usual, the Dimensions way is if a resource doesn’t already exist, we create it! Resouces are tailor-made to help to meet statutory learning objectives in the 2014 National Curriculum.
Speech and Language Intervention
Clearly planned-out lessons, with quality resources to hand, are an efficient way for support and/or pastoral staff to work with small groups of children to achieve rapid results in oracy skills for lower ability pupils or for those identified with additonal needs in speech and language.
Whole-Class Approach to Speaking and Listening
Robust enough for teachers to deliver to a whole class, Speech Bubbles lessons can improve interpersonal and communication skills across an entire phase. Progression is assured for all levels of students, with differentiation woven through activities and lessons.
Example Differentiation in KS1
- Year One skills
- Year Two skills
- Year Three skills (higher ability)
“A lesson observation from the KS1 Seaside Unit was judged as outstanding. The descriptive language that children used was truly fantastic, using theme-related vocabulary as well as powerful adjectives, conjunctions and composing quite complex sentences. They were all able to describe their adventure through from the opening, to the problem and the resolution stage of the story.
The whole class were engaged, keen and focused and produced amazing story ideas which they then went on to use in their extended writing session. The children and I thoroughly enjoyed the session and I felt that it had a really positive impact on their language acquisition and engagement in learning.”
