A Creative Curriculum for Northern Ireland – Our Journey So Far

Alison Steen (Principal) and Sandra Brown (Senior Teacher) of Drumrane Primary School, Dungiven, have been implementing and embracing Dimensions Creative Curriculum over the past year. Here they describe the positive impact it has had on the whole school. Alison connected with Dimensions Curriculum founder, Elaine Sutton, whose creative approach has swept across Primary Schools in England and as far away as Switzerland, Germany and Hong Kong.

NI Primary Northern Ireland creative curriciulum primary “The teachers are absolutely reinvigorated!”
(Alison Steen, Principal)

“Teachers were delighted to invest in this ready-made resource that would effectively deliver all aspects of the NI curriculum through thematic learning, without adding a preparation and planning workload. We trialled it in school, each class having chosen a Thematic Unit to deliver. The teaching staff found it to be comprehensive in terms of available resources, with a refreshing approach for interactive, arts and language-based learning. It was subsequently rolled out to a cluster group of schools, to further evaluate the potential of this creative and cohesive approach to meet the needs of the NI Curriculum. In Drumrane, we found these benefits to using Dimensions Thematic Units:

Positive Impact on the Entire School Community
NI Primary Primary curriculum NI Northern Ireland The benefits have been felt throughout the school. The children love the exciting themes and talk about what they are learning and are keen to find out which theme is next! Teachers are reinvigorated; having a structure with all resources provided takes away a lot of the planning and preparation. Governors are delighted; feedback from a literacy lesson observation by a Parent Governor was fantastic and they are keen to see more.
Finally, as senior school leaders, it gives us peace of mind that the NI Curriculum is covered, with the additional benefits of whole-school cohesion. Best of all, our children are buzzing every day – engaged, excited and progressing!”

“The children have loved it and been thoroughly engaged.”
(Sandra Brown, Senior Teacher)

Comment from Ofsted March 2016, Waterloo Primary School, Ashton-Under-Lyne

"The school's curriculum ensures a strong focus on developing the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Pupils' knowledge and skills in other subjects, such as science, geography, history and art are developed through a range of cross-curricular topics and themes, which are planned to capture and motivate their interest and develop a love of learning. Pupils' positive views about their work reflect that this is successful."

"Bubbles resources are incredibly simple and easy to follow. The warm-up activities are great – my children are singing ‘Radio Rock’ continually at the moment!!! I like the fact it links with other resources we have in school and that it reinforces teaching in other curricular areas. I've found it to be an invaluable, creative way to teach and wouldn't hesitate in recommending the resources to other teachers."

“The Ofsted inspection reflected a huge improvement in our past performance. They were impressed with all aspects of the school and could see the curriculum work we are doing through Dimensions has made a big difference. They were particularly impressed with the marking programmes and the fact that the children were able to explain how they worked and implement next steps themselves. There is no doubt that Dimensions has had a hugely positive impact on raising standards.”

“I'm really enjoying learning with our new themes. I can make connections between what I am learning in different subjects. We do lots of practical and fun things in class now. My favourite was the Cracking Ideas theme. I loved it so much I didn't want it to end!"

"The school’s recently revised curriculum is interesting, broad and well balanced. Your carefully chosen revisions to the curriculum for subjects other than English and mathematics engage all learners, but particularly boys. Teachers make good use of practical experiences to engage pupils in learning about abstract concepts. For example, in a computing lesson, pupils developed their skills in creating and debugging algorithms through the production of a jam sandwich." (Daisyfield Primary School, Blackburn; Ofsted Short Inspection report December 2017)
