The Dimensions Design Modules guide you through the development process by following principles of best practice in creative curriculum design. There are five different modules which address the key questions:


  • What are we trying to achieve?
  • How do we organise learning?
  • How well are we achieving our aims?


Module 1 is about CREATIVITY

Module 2 is about CREATIVE CURRICULUM RATIONALE

Module 3 is about CURRICULUM AIMS

Module 4 is about CURRICULUM ORGANISATION

Module 5 is about ASSESSMENT, MONITORING AND EVALUATING

They are all easy to follow and clearly presented. By using the PowerPoint presentations and accompanying notes, staff can work through the Action Points together in order to develop a sense of curriculum ownership and establish a clear direction. These modules can be used as part of twilight sessions, SLT or staff meetings or INSET days.


There is also a distinct CPD element, particularly in Module 1 which explores individuals’ creative abilities and challenges common misconceptions.

As creativity is central to the creative curriculum, emphasis is initially placed on defining characteristics and clarifying definitions within the context of education before embarking upon practical implementation as part of designing a creative curriculum. Issues such as assessing creativity are also covered within this module.


Creativity should be embedded throughout the learning experience in order to develop skills for life such as flexibility, resilience and the ability to solve problems.



It is vital that staff have a shared understanding of why your school is looking to change the curriculum in this way. Creative teaching and teaching for creative learning should be clearly understood and there must be a commitment to providing pupils with the opportunities to develop creative skills and approaches right across the curriculum, not just in the arts. Part of this module plots the course of creativity within primary education since the inception of the National Curriculum in 1988 and challenges thinking around current expectations and outcomes.

Schools must be clear about what they are trying to achieve through implementing a new approach to the curriculum. Curriculum aims should be personal and related to individual schools' areas for development.

In line with the findings of the Cambridge Review, we believe that curriculum aims should be the driving force within schools.

This module takes you step-by-step through the process of defining curriculum aims and looks at practical ways of focusing on intended outcomes.

Curriculum Organisation

 

This can be the most daunting part of curriculum design and schools often struggle to find a starting point in the process. Curriculum organisation needs careful consideration, taking into account the many factors that make your school different to another. Mapping and planning needs to be rigorous and thorough, ensuring statutory coverage is in line with the National Curriculum, and this module provides a focused direction with clearly sequenced action points.

The Dimensions Model will help schools to organise the learning in a progressive and creative way.




Once your new curriculum is implemented it must be carefully assessed, monitored and evaluated.

The Dimensions Assessment for Learning tools, included in the Dimensions Model, help to make the assessment process more manageable, employing simple yet effective methods that encourage constructive and collaborative working.

Developing a system for monitoring and evaluation is also covered within this module.
